A deeply impressive performance from Miguel Ángel Perera marks the afternoon at La Maestranza, but the sword prevents a potential double trophy against a brave bull from Santiago Domecq.
The eleventh subscription fixture at Seville’s bullring left one clear impression: Miguel Ángel Perera’s bullfighting reached remarkable heights, yet the sword once again had the final say. The Extremaduran matador produced the most complete performance of the afternoon against an outstanding second bull from Santiago Domecq, awarded a lap of honour during the drag, although the final failure with the steel prevented the triumph from turning into trophies.
The corrida began with Manuel Escribano seeking impact from the outset, greeting the opening bull at the gate. The early scare, after being unseated from the muleta, did not diminish his determination. He stood out particularly in the banderillas, placing daring and precise pairs that connected with the crowd. With the muleta he found commendable moments by lowering his hand, but the bull soon lost strength and the performance faded despite the resolve of the Seville-born matador.
The key moment arrived with the second. Perera opted for composure with the cape and encountered a bull that charged deeply with its head down. The faena grew in intensity through linked series on both sides, always with a low hand and clean lines that resonated throughout La Maestranza. A final passage at close quarters heightened the emotion and suggested a performance of great significance. However, an insufficient sword thrust and repeated attempts with the coup de grâce cooled the atmosphere, turning a potential triumph into an ovation after warnings.
Perera’s second appearance proved far more demanding. The bull lacked consistency and commitment, forcing constant effort without reward. Its irregular behaviour prevented the faena from developing, leaving only the matador’s determination on display.
Borja Jiménez also offered moments of interest. In his first he showed firmness and the ability to draw what he could from a bull that faded quickly, constructing measured series, particularly on the natural side. Failure with the sword closed any chance of a trophy after a quietly meritorious performance.
With the sixth, the Seville matador sought to reignite the afternoon by going to the gate. The vibrant start and a kneeling opening created expectation, although the bull displayed temper and required steady control. Borja achieved moments of connection in the centre of the ring before the sword once again denied a possible reward.
The corrida, shaped by the quality of the second bull and the commitment of all three matadors, left the feeling of an afternoon rich in content but without tangible prizes.
