Morante's Return to Seville

Morante rises in Seville and seals a major triumph

The Sevillian matador cuts two ears at La Maestranza in a high-quality afternoon where Roca Rey and David de Miranda also claim trophies.

The Seville season got underway in style at La Maestranza under the new management of Lances de Futuro. Easter Sunday once again became the focal point of bullfighting, with a packed arena and a highly anticipated line-up that delivered overall.Morante de la Puebla, the central figure of the afternoon, produced a performance of remarkable artistic depth, earning a symbolic triumph after cutting two ears from the fourth bull. The Sevillian left moments of inspiration with the cape, evoking the purest classicism in a reception that brought the crowd to its feet. With the muleta, he crafted a measured and exquisitely tempered faena, guiding the Garcigrande bull with a softness that made the difference. A precise sword thrust sealed a performance of real substance. He had not enjoyed the same opportunity with his first, a low-energy bull that limited his options and prevented him from fully shaping the faena.Roca Rey once again showed why he is a leading figure in modern bullfighting. His first required firmness and authority, qualities the Peruvian displayed from a vibrant start, even kneeling, to dominate a measured charge. The faena grew in intensity, with passages on both sides and a tight finish that connected with the crowd, although it was rewarded with an ovation. He did manage to cut an ear from the fifth after a deeper, more complete performance. The Lima-born matador opted for a dominant style, lowering the hand and linking meritorious series, particularly on the right. The strong request for a second trophy was not granted despite the crowd’s enthusiasm.David de Miranda faced a special moment in his debut on an Easter Sunday in Seville. His first offered little, heading towards the boards and lacking transmission. However, the Huelva-born matador showed determination with the sixth, a demanding bull that required total commitment. After an early knockdown without consequences, De Miranda regrouped and built a courageous and resolute faena. A final flourish of manoletinas lifted the crowd, who acknowledged his effort with the award of an ear.The afternoon also featured the presence of King Emeritus Juan Carlos I in the royal box, adding further significance to the occasion. All three matadors dedicated their first bulls, in a day also marked by tributes to recently deceased figures of the bullfighting world.
