the bullring of SEVILLE

“The Seville bullring, for its classical and noble architecture, for its harmonious proportions, for its tradition, is undoubtedly the most beautiful and evocative of the Spanish bullrings”. José María de Cossío, Los toros.

La Maestranza, one of the bullrings with the most charisma and tradition in Spain and, why not say it, in the world. Every year the most important figures of the moment pass through Seville as well as an important number of novilleros (young bullfighters). The posters sometimes generate great controversy and never leave anyone indifferent. The public, always elegant, comes enthusiastically to the bullring every afternoon; a bullring where silence and respect are breathed. The atmosphere of the Real Maestranza is unique, magical. And, as the song says, Seville has a special colour.

The Maestranza is the second most important bullring in Spain, only behind the Monumental de Las Ventas in Madrid.

HISTORY of the sevilla bullring

In 1670, during the reign of Charles II, the Real Cuerpo de Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla was founded. It is a Nobiliary Corporation made up of knights belonging to ancient noble families that carries out numerous charitable activities in the city and is responsible for the conservation of this magnificent building, as well as promoting the equestrian art and bullfighting. These nobles are 230 “Maestrantes” and their Eldest Brother is His Majesty the King.

The bullring belongs to him and is one of the oldest in the city. Its style is late Baroque, typical of the second half of the 18th century. But the Real Maestranza of Seville is much more than a bullring, in fact it is one of the most valuable and emblematic architectural ensembles of the Andalusian capital. Its more than 200 years of life in constant evolution make it a complex building.

CHARACTERISTICS

The Real Plaza de Toros de Sevilla was built on Monte el Baratillo, hence it is also known as Coso del Baratillo. The current building took 120 years to build, from 1761 to 1881. Before that, another square had been built on the same site, but it was made of wood. The final construction was begun by Francisco Sánchez de Aragón and Pedro and Vicente de San Martín, with a circular shape, although successive alterations have given the bullring a slightly oval shape. The work was completed by the architect Juan Talavera.

It is located at number 12 Paseo de Colón in Seville and is, of course, first class. It has a capacity for 12,500 spectators. To open the coveted Puerta del Príncipe it is necessary to cut off three ears. It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and Spanish Historical Heritage since 1983.
